The American Kennel Club Good Citizen Class is for dogs six months old and older. This seven-week course builds on what your dog learned in AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy class, focusing on the areas of good manners and obedience.
Taught by an AKC-certified instructor, this course helps your pet develop 10 key skills, including:
- accepting a friendly stranger
- sitting politely for petting
- appearance and grooming
- walking on a loose lead
- walking through a crowd
- sitting and lying down on command and staying in place
- coming when calling
- reacting well to other dogs
- reacting well to distraction
- responding positively toward supervised separation
CGC is a prerequisite for many therapy dog certifications. Some homeowners’ insurance programs offer discounts for CGC dogs, and an increasing number of apartments and condos see CGC awards as a bonus for becoming a resident.
After passing the CGC test and taking the Responsible Dog Ownership pledge, your pup will earn the AKC title of Canine Good Citizen. This title makes him eligible for therapy dog training and prepares him to participate in a wide variety of sports and activities like agility, tracking, and performance events.
Dogs must complete AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy training or receive approval from the instructor in order to participate.
